Getting there

Taking the the Valley Highway (9) to Mt Baker Highway (542), you’ll pass through beautiful countryside with views of the Twin Sisters. The Horseshoe Bend trailhead is just outside of the quaint town Glacier that has some great options for lunch or a coffee – Gunners Tex Mex BBQ and Wake ‘N Bakery are a couple of our favorites.

Noteworthy Features

The entire trail is along the North Fork Nooksack River. That said, be sure to check the Forest Service website before you go. Because this trail is along the river, flooding is possible which will cause the FS to close the trail.

One of the best perks of this hike is the many places that you can pull over and hang out by the river.

I think the river was our pup’s favorite part as well, he loves a good swim. 🙂

On a similar note, this area is great for fishing, offering ample opportunities to reel in some memorable catches. Before casting your line, be sure to check the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife for any current restrictions or regulations to ensure a smooth angling experience.

There are some maple trees along the trail, so there are sure to be some colors in the Fall.

Moreover, as you venture along the trail, keep an eye out for the vibrant maple trees. Come autumn, these trees put on a show, painting the landscape with hues of red, orange, and gold.

If the trail seems a bit distant from home, consider staying at the picturesque Douglas Fir Campground, which conveniently links to this trail.

Challenges

This is a popular trail, so be prepared for a crowd on the weekends, especially during peak seasons or holidays. Additionally, after periods of extensive rain, the trail can become muddy, making it essential to wear appropriate footwear and consider the possibility of slower progress along the route.

Happy Exploring!
